Flour Tortillas

These Flour Tortillas are so easy to make, you will wonder why you didn’t attempt to make them sooner. They are super soft and chewy and have a flavor that store bought tortillas are missing.

For years I have used store bought tortillas for tocos and quesadillas. To tell you the truth I never even thought about making my own. It was easier to just open a bag of tortillas then put more time into everything that went in them, Then one day while speaking to my son, he was making tortillas for his dinner. He explained how easy it was and how little ingredients it took. That is when I thought, I have to give this a try. Now my son had a fancy tortillas press. Maybe one day I will make the investment and get one, but for right now my rolling pin works just fine. With just six ingredients I had the softest, chewiest tortillas I have ever had. I must say, now I’m hooked.

How To Make Soft Chewy Flour Tortillas

To a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt and garlic powder, mix well to combine.

Add the softened butter and pour hot water on top.

Mix the butter and hot water into the flour mixture until mostly combined.

Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 2 to 3 minutes to form a smooth ball.

Place dough ball into a lightly greased bowl and cover with a damp towel for 10 minutes to rest. Remove dough from the bowl and cut into 10 to 12 portions then roll each one into a smooth round ball.

Using a lightly floured rolling pin, roll each dough ball into a 8” to 10” circle.

Place a skillet that is big enough to fit the tortillas on medium high heat. Lightly spray the bottom with cooking spray. Place one tortilla in the hot skillet and allow to cook for 30 to 40 seconds. Flip tortilla and cook an additional 30 to 40 seconds or until slightly golden. Remove from heat and place on a plate. Cover with a clean kitchen towel while you cook the remaining tortillas.

Use Tortillas right away or store in an air tight container for up to three days. These Tortillas can also be stored in the freezer in a zip lock bag for up to three months.
